Straight Bangers

Great songs you haven't heard, everyday. New releases, oldies, your parents' music and more. Hit the search or browse by artist, genre or year.

Alt-J (∆) – Taro

Pretty incredible song.  No idea how to classify it, but it goes.   Off An Awesome Wave (2012), music video footage from the crazy movie Powaqqatsi: Life in Transformation (1988)

Spoek Mathambo – Control

South African “vocalist/rapper/afro-futurist” Spoek Mathambo is on some cool, weird shit with this Joy Division cover. Posting this one mostly because the video’s amazing, but be sure to check out some of his other stuff ‘cuz there’s an enormous amount of variation in styles from one track to the next.

Heard it at the bar last night (?), it’s the definition of a Straight Banger.

Orishas – 537 CUBA

Listen to the Orishas, you guys.  This sampling “Chan Chan” by the Buena Vista Social Club.   Off A Lo Cubano (2000).

String Cheese Incident – Rivertrance (Live in Chicago, 12/10/2011)

It’s just about impossible to classify these guys as one genre of music, which is where the attraction is for me. This particular jam involves elements of rock, Irish jig, bluegrass, electronic music, all made more flavorful with some improvisation. Don’t be fooled by the “live”-ness of the video, it has soundboard-quality audio.
