String Cheese Incident – Rivertrance (Live in Chicago, 12/10/2011)

It’s just about impossible to classify these guys as one genre of music, which is where the attraction is for me. This particular jam involves elements of rock, Irish jig, bluegrass, electronic music, all made more flavorful with some improvisation. Don’t be fooled by the “live”-ness of the video, it has soundboard-quality audio.

Railroad Earth – Hard Livin’

These guys are are a rising force in the bluegrass scene, though their music defies any sort of general classification. The members coalesced out of various musical outfits in the Jersey area, believe it or not. This is off 2008’s Amen Corner

Junior Kimbrough – Meet Me in the City

A classic from a blues legend, and an oft covered tune. The Black Keys made a tribute album to this guy called Chulahoma when he died in ’98, which is assuredly worth checking out.

Béla Fleck – When Joy Kills Sorrow

The song title doesn’t lie; the tune starts off slow and sorrowful, then picks up into a joyous raucous, and fluctuates between throughout the tune. Béla’s been heralded as the best banjo player alive, and this song is so damn dank that a newer bluegrass ensemble named themselves “Joy Kills Sorrow.” Sam Bush, coincidentally heralded as the best mandoline player alive, is on the track, as is Jerry Douglas, Stuart Duncan, Tony Rice, and Mark Schatz.

From Béla Fleck’s studio 1999 album The Bluegrass Sessions. The albums features veritable legends of bluegrass, including John Hartford and the recently deceased Earl Scruggs.
